This is an urgent appeal to all pilots to avoid disrupting fire-fighting operations. This notice is aimed primarily at paraglider and hang glider pilots, but the sentiment may be extended to all recreational pilots in the Western Cape.
Suspending fire-fighting operations has serious ramifications: allowing a fire to rage, putting property and fire-fighters at risk, and also incurs a significant hourly cost of operating multiple helicopters.
Rescue services assisted a male paraglider pilot (age 67) after he had an accident in the Piketberg Mountains just north of Piketberg.
On 25th February 2023, instructor Nigel Frith was involved in an accident on the mountainside near Wolseley in the Western Cape. He later died of his injuries.
At the SAHPA AGM on 31st October 2023, the voting for SAHPA Chairman were invalidated due to non-disclosure by one of the nominees who is undergoing enforcement action by SACAA.
The top-launch (top of the sand-dune) at Kleinkrantz is currently CLOSED and may not be used for flying activities.
