We’re excited to announce the upcoming Barberton Paragliding Open (BPO) 2025, Africa’s longest-running paragliding competition! Taking place from 15 to 21 June 2025, this highly anticipated event will gather pilots from across the continent and beyond to compete over the stunning landscape of Barberton, South Africa.

Why Barberton?

Barberton is nestled in the scenic De Kaap Valley, surrounded by the ancient Makhonjwa Mountains—a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its Geo-Trail. This historic mining town offers pilots spectacular views, reliable thermals, and challenging tasks. With a sub-tropical climate ensuring warm winter days and predictable flying conditions, competitors can expect excellent flying from late morning through the afternoon, with tasks typically ranging from 30km to 80km.

Travel Tips

Nearest Airports: Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA), Mbombela (Nelspruit) (45 km away), and O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg (approximately 4.5-hour drive).

Transportation: Car rentals are available at KMIA.

About the Flying Site

Lone Tree Hill is a long-established site initially popular with hang-gliders, now predominantly used by paragliders. It features:

  • Launch altitude: 1290m asl
  • Landing altitude: Barberton Golf Course, 830m asl
  • Wind direction: Westerly, Northerly, North-easterly
  • Spacious, maintained launch area

Thermal activity during the winter months ranges from gentle (<1m/s) to strong (~5m/s), making it suitable for pilots of all skill levels.
