On 9 January 2021, an experienced pilot had an unfortunate paragliding accident at a site known as Bambi, just outside Lydenburg in Mpumalanga. The pilot made an emergency landing on a steep rocky slope and was badly injured.
Nelspruit Search and Rescue were on the scene with an hour, and he was taken to Nelspruit Mediclinic shortly after.
The community of paragliding pilots is deeply grateful to the team of rescuers and paramedics that worked tirelessly and like a well-oiled machine to extract a fellow pilot from the rocky terrain.
This accident will be investigated by the Accident and Incident Investigations Department (AIID) at the South Africa Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA).
